July 11, 2025 - Driving from Alaska to Maryland

| We had breakfast in the Triple J Hotel restaurant -- forgettable -- and then hit the road. Exiting Dawson City as passed this guy. | ||||||

Today would be a traveling day, from Dawson City to Whitehorse. It's about a six and a half hour drive along Highway 2 -- also known as the Klondike Highway. The highway runs in the general direction of the Yukon River, but not alongside. The highway runs on the north side, crosses the river about two-thirds of the way to Whitehorse, then runs on the south side. Looking backwards on the Klondike Highway. |

The Klondike Highway was paved the entire way, except for two sections where they were doing some serious road construction work. Then we drove on dirt. Also, when this happened, you would have to wait until a pilot truck showed up and guided you and your convoy through. Here you can see the pilot truck at far right.

A better shot of the pilot truck. As you can see, it is kind of cloudy and gloomy and was this way most of the drive. |

| That's definately the Yukon River. The current runs from south to north, so prospectors could float from Whitehorse to Dawson City, although I'm sure it was not as simple as that. | ||||||

We cross the Yukon River about two thirds of the way to Whitehorse. Woohoo!
The little town of Carmacks -- one of the few spots of civilization between Dawson City and Whitehorse -- is ahead on the south side of the river.

Getting close to Whitehorse. We did no sightseeing in Whitehorse this time. It was strictly an overnight stop. We stayed in the Skyy Hotel, across the street-- in this case, the Alaska Highway -- from the airport, and had dinner at a place we had heard about on our previous stop: the Woodcutters Blanket. |
